but的基本意思相當于in spite of this或表示與所預料的不一樣,意為“但是,然而,盡管如此”，不與though,although連用。
but可用來表達諸如憤怒、吃驚等強烈的感情，用來加強語氣，也可用在表示歉意的句子里，常不譯出，還可用于改變話題，意為“無論如何”“反正”“好”。
如果but接動詞不定式,當前面有do或cannot時,不定式不帶to; 當前面有anything, everything, nothing等詞時,不定式常不帶to,但也有例外; 其余情況帶to。
與but連用的too...to do結(jié)構(gòu)不具有否定意義。
如果主句含有hardly,never,never so,not so,not such等詞，可用but,but that或but what引導表示結(jié)果的狀語從句，構(gòu)成雙重否定，相當于that...not或unless，譯作“沒有…不”“若…，就一定”。
如果but that引出的分句描述的是真實情況，而主句描述的是非真實的情況，則主句多用虛擬語氣，此時譯作“假如沒有…”“要不是”
not but that...是it is not but that的省略法, but無否定意義,譯作“雖然…可是…”。
在not...but...結(jié)構(gòu)里，可以不借助do(does)來否定動詞，而否定其他成分，譯作“不是…而是”。
