常用用法

many用作形容詞時(shí)后接復(fù)數(shù)名詞,表示許多同樣的人或物(但數(shù)目不明確),用作主語時(shí),其謂語動(dòng)詞要用復(fù)數(shù)形式。常用于否定句中。
many可用來強(qiáng)調(diào)more,可用too, so, how等修飾。
many多用作定語,只有在對比結(jié)構(gòu)中,可用作表語,往往含有“雖然多”或“確實(shí)多”的意思。
many a的意思是“許多”,與“單數(shù)名詞+單數(shù)動(dòng)詞”連用。當(dāng)其修飾賓語時(shí),賓語常置于句首,且主謂倒裝。

many用作代詞時(shí),作“許多,許多人”解,常用于many of...結(jié)構(gòu)中,謂語動(dòng)詞須用復(fù)數(shù)。
many或a good〔great〕 many用作主語時(shí),其謂語動(dòng)詞用復(fù)數(shù)。
在英語口語中, many通常用于否定句、疑問句中。在肯定句中many多用于正式文體,相當(dāng)于口語中的a lot of或lots of。另外,當(dāng)其單獨(dú)作主語或賓語,含有對比意味時(shí),當(dāng)其充當(dāng)名詞詞組中心,只帶有后置定語時(shí)或當(dāng)其前面常有as, so, too, very, a good, a great等詞或詞組時(shí), many也用于肯定句中。

這組詞(組)都表示“許多”的意思。其區(qū)別在于:many是普通用語,其后只能接可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù); many a是書面用語,后接單數(shù)可數(shù)名詞,當(dāng)修飾主語時(shí)謂語動(dòng)詞要用單數(shù)形式; much是普通用語,是對量和程度而言的,只能修飾不可數(shù)名詞; a number of可用來修可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù); a lot of和lots of既可接可數(shù)名詞,也可接不可數(shù)名詞,多用于肯定句。a great deal of后接不可數(shù)名詞,謂語動(dòng)詞用單數(shù),且常用于肯定句中。例如:
Man and the ape have many things in common.人和猿有許多共同之處。
Many a man comes or goes.一個(gè)又一個(gè)的人來來去去。
A number of people came to the meeting from all over the world.來自世界各地的許多人參加了這次會(huì)議。
A lot of friends are thinking of emigrating.許多朋友正在考慮移民國外。
There are lots of antiques shops in Australia now.現(xiàn)在澳大利亞有許許多多的古玩店。
