常用用法

middle用作名詞時(shí),意思是“中間,當(dāng)中,中部”,既可用于空間,又可用于時(shí)間。既可指物體兩端或兩邊相等距離的中央或中間部分,也可指一段時(shí)間或行動(dòng)始末的中間一段。前面一般加定冠詞the,只用單數(shù)形式。其后一般接介詞of。
middle也可表示身體的“中部,腰部”,跟waist意思相近。
in the middle of v -ing意思是“正忙于做某事”。

這組詞都有“中間”“中部”的意思。其區(qū)別在于:
1.middle指距離兩端或兩邊相等距離的中央或中間部分,也可指一段時(shí)間或行動(dòng)始末的中間一段; midst指空間、時(shí)間、事物、人群等的中間; core指果實(shí)的果心; centre指空間的方、圓等位于中心的位置。例如:
There is a double writing table in the middle of the room.房子中間放著一張雙人寫字臺(tái)。
He was elected from the midst of the prisoners.他是從犯人中選出的。
The core of the apple is hard.蘋果核是硬的。
This building is at the centre of the city.這座大樓坐落在市中心。
2.core引申為“精髓”“核心”或“重要部分”; centre則引申為重要活動(dòng)或事物的中心。例如:
We didn't get to the core of the subject.我們沒觸及問題的核心。
The core of our appeal is freedom of speech.我們呼吁的中心是要言論自由。
She loves to be the centre of interest.她喜歡成為引人注意的中心人物。

三者的意思并不相同。其區(qū)別在于：middle school的意思是“中學(xué)(包括初中和高中)”,是一種比較籠統(tǒng)的用法; junior middle school的意思是“初中”; senior middle schools的意思是“高中”。例如:
When he studied in middle school, he was dismissed for stealing.他在中學(xué)讀書時(shí),因偷竊而被開除。
About 80 percent of the graduates advanced to senior middle schools.約有80%的畢業(yè)生升入了高中。
My brother dropped out at the end of the second year of his junior middle school.我哥哥念完初中二年級(jí)就休學(xué)了。
