power的基本意思是“力,力量”,可指人的體力、思維能力,也可指機(jī)器的功力、動(dòng)力或功率,還可指人或國(guó)家甚至是某個(gè)機(jī)構(gòu)的權(quán)力、勢(shì)力或影響力。這種權(quán)力或影響力可由法律、規(guī)章所賦予,也可由于本身力量的強(qiáng)大而自然產(chǎn)生的。power作“強(qiáng)國(guó)”解時(shí),一般指在政治、經(jīng)濟(jì)或軍事等方面對(duì)世界有一定影響的大國(guó)或強(qiáng)國(guó)。power還可用于數(shù)學(xué)方面,作“冪,乘方”解。
