常用用法

remainder常與定冠詞the連用，在句中用作主語(yǔ)表示復(fù)數(shù)意義時(shí)，謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞要用復(fù)數(shù)形式。

這組詞都有“剩余”的意思。其區(qū)別是：
remains指某物已用掉或毀掉一部分后的剩余部分或殘余部分; remainder著重指作了扣除之后剩下的東西,也可指算術(shù)中的差數(shù)或余數(shù); residue指某一過(guò)程中的殘余物,尤指在化學(xué)反應(yīng)中; rest表示在原有總體上剩下來(lái)的人或事物。例如:
Take five from eight and the remainder is three. 8減5余3。
Twenty of us went to reap wheat and the remainder worked in the cotton fields.我們之中20人去割麥,其余人在棉花田勞動(dòng)。
