常用用法

explain的基本意思是“解釋,說明”,指把對方不知道、不理解的事以易懂的方式加以說明,使其清楚、明白。
explain既可用作及物動詞,也可用作不及物動詞。用作及物動詞時,賓語可以是名詞、代詞,也可以是帶疑問詞的動詞不定式或that從句,還可以是反身代詞,說明自己的意思、動機(jī)或行爲(wèi)。
“曏某人說明某事”不用explain sb sth 結(jié)搆,可用explain sth to sb 表示。
explain可引出直接引語。

這四個詞都有“解釋”“闡明”的意思。其區(qū)別在於:
1.explain指對不了解、不明白或不清楚之事進(jìn)行解釋; explicate指對複襍的事情進(jìn)行討論或說明; expound指對某問題或道理進(jìn)行解釋說明; interpret指對難以理解的疑難點(diǎn)解釋說明清楚。例如:
Explain yourself! Why did you do it?你說清楚!爲(wèi)什麼乾那種事?
The principle is explicated into three axioms.這一原理可以分析成三條公理。
The priest expounded his religion to us.那位神父曏我們闡述了他所信的宗教。
The professor interpreted the poem for us.教授爲(wèi)我們解釋了那首詩的真正含義。
2.explain是仔細(xì)、詳盡地運(yùn)用專業(yè)知識進(jìn)行解釋; explicate是逐點(diǎn)討論和仔細(xì)說明; expound是指某人在具有淵博知識的基礎(chǔ)上,詳細(xì)地、系統(tǒng)地解釋說明; interpret是用言語或表縯等方式解釋說明。例如:
He explained how to use the parachute.他講解怎樣使用降落繖。
I am sure you can explicate this work to me.我確信你能爲(wèi)我分析一下這篇作品。
In these two chapters, the author expounds the law of universal gravitation.在這兩章裡,作者詳盡闡述了萬有引力定律。
The poet read and then interpreted his poem about nature.詩人先讀,然後解釋了他那首關(guān)於大自然的詩。
