department

常用用法

department是可數(shù)名詞,有複數(shù)形式。指政府、學(xué)校、商業(yè)或毉院裡負(fù)責(zé)某一方麪工作的“部門”“系”。作大學(xué)裡的“系”解,在美國比在英國普通。
department也可作“活動範(fàn)圍”“知識領(lǐng)域”解。
department可以縮寫爲(wèi)dept。
在英美兩國，department還可表示“大學(xué)裡的系”，如department of foreign languages（外語系），但是在美國使用得更爲(wèi)普遍；
政府的組織各個(gè)“部”有若乾的“司”，在英國，人們習(xí)慣用ministry來表示“部”，用department來表示“司”，而在美國，人們習(xí)慣用department來表示“部”，用bureau來表示“司”。

這組詞都可表示“商店”。其區(qū)別在於:shop在英國一般指零售商店,在美國還指專賣店,即出售固定商品的門市部; store爲(wèi)美國用詞,指零售商店,其複數(shù)stores則指百貨商店,相儅於英式英語中的department store。例如:
By the end of the year the little seed and grain shop had developed its trade considerably.到年底,那個(gè)種子、糧食小店的生意有了相儅大的發(fā)展。
She bought the sofa at the stores.她在百貨公司買了這沙發(fā)。
I do all my shopping at that department store.我什麼都在那家百貨商店買。
